Emphasis On Facts, Personalized Medicine For Lung Cancer Awareness Month
TAMPA, Fla. -- With more than 215,000 Americans estimated to be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008, Moffitt Cancer Center is doing its part to fight this disease by launching an awareness and education initiative addressing the facts surrounding lung cancer and showcasing how personalized medicine treatment techniques are breaking new ground for those diagnosed. Dr. Gerold Bepler, an internationally known lung cancer researcher, is the Division Chief of the Lung Cancer Program at Moffitt: "Doctors have really made the decision on what chemotherapy to give to a patient with lung cancer simply based on side effect profiles and convenience but not really on which particular therapy is likely to have the best effect on th...

Avastin Gives An Additional 4 Months Of Life To Patients With One Of The Most Common Types Of Lung Cancer
BASEL, SWITZERLAND -- Roche announced today that an exploratory analysis of the pivotal phase III E4599 study demonstrated that Avastin (bevacizumab) in combination with paclitaxel and carboplatin chemotherapy led to an increase in overall survival of 4 months over chemotherapy alone in patients with advanced adenocarcinoma, the most common form of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Avastin gives these patients a 45% better chance of survival compared to chemotherapy alone. The E4599 study previously reported a significant increase in median overall survival in advanced NSCLC and was the first time a treatment was proven to extend overall survival beyond one year in these difficult to treat patients. This new analysis...

Phase 2 Study Of IMC-1121B In First-line Treatment Of Advanced Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Commences Patient Enrollment
NEW YORK -- ImClone Systems Incorporated, a global leader in the development and commercialization of novel antibodies to treat cancer, today announced that its disease-directed Phase 2 clinical trial of IMC-1121B in combination with paclitaxel and carboplatin as first-line therapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has opened for patient enrollment. IMC-1121B is ImClone's proprietary fully human, IgG1 anti-vascular growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) monoclonal antibody. This open-label Phase 2 single-arm study is enrolling patients with Stage IIIB or IV NSCLC. Approximately 40 patients are expected to be enrolled. This study is designed to evaluate the progression-free survival rate at six months of IMC-1121B...

Lung Cancer Often Gets Pushed To The Back Of The Line By Misconceptions
They call it "The Invisible Cancer." It develops and grows quietly, stealthily -- invisibly -- typically causing no noticeable symptoms until it's way too late. Only about 15 percent of those who are diagnosed with the invisible cancer survive even five years. Which begs the obvious question: How can a disease that kills more than 160,000 Americans a year -- making it the deadliest of all cancers -- still be invisible? Shouldn't it be visible by now? Theoretically, yes, lung cancer -- the invisible cancer -- should be more than a mere blip on America's cancer radar. Other forms of the disease -- breast cancer for women, prostate cancer for men, just to name a couple -- tend to grab the headlines, the public sympathy and, not coinci...

Lung Cancer Alliance Releases 4th Annual Report Card On Lung Cancer
WASHINGTON -- For the fourth year in a row, Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) marked the start of Lung Cancer Awareness Month with the release of its "Report Card on Lung Cancer", a national assessment of progress being made in the fight against lung cancer. For 2008, LCA noted slight improvements, but overall, failing grades continued. "The good news is that we are finally seeing slight improvements - but make no mistake, the overall grades remain unsatisfactory," said Laurie Fenton Ambrose, LCA President & CEO. "We must and can do better for all those living with or at risk for lung cancer - a disease that remains the most stigmatized, least funded and ignored of all the leading cancers," she said. The 2008 Report Card o...

Infinity Announces Expansion Of Phase 2 Clinical Study Evaluating IPI-504 In Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Infinity Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has met pre-specified criteria to expand both arms of its ongoing Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating IPI-504 (retaspimycin hydrochloride), its lead heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) inhibitor, in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study is designed to evaluate IPI-504 as a monotherapy in patients with Stage IIIb/IV NSCLC whose tumors have relapsed or become refractory to prior treatment with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Initially, the study enrolled a total of 20 patients in two equal groups: one group with known epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations and one group with wild-type EGFR. At least one patient in eac...

Scientists Find 26 Genes Promoting Lung Cancer
NEW YORK -- In the largest effort of its kind, scientists have identified 26 genes that, when damaged, appear to promote lung cancer. It's a step toward developing new treatments that can be tailored to specific patients. The federally funded project was the largest ever to screen genes for mutations in the most common form of lung cancer, called adenocarcinoma. The results more than double the catalogue of genes implicated in that condition. The findings, from scientists at a dozen institutions in the United States and Germany, appear in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States, Canada and worldwide. The study focused on tumours that originated in the lung and were...

Large-Scale Genetic Study Sheds New Light On Lung Cancer, Opens Door To Individualized Treatment Strategies
A multi-institution team, funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), today reported results of the largest effort to date to chart the genetic changes involved in the most common form of lung cancer, lung adenocarcinoma. The findings should help pave the way for more individualized approaches for detecting and treating the nation's leading cause of cancer deaths. In a paper published in the Oct. 23 issue of the journal "Nature", the Tumor Sequencing Project (TSP) consortium identified 26 genes that are frequently mutated in lung adenocarcinoma - an achievement that more than doubles the number of genes known to be associated with the deadly disease. But th...

Full Body Radiosurgery Expands Treatment Options For Patients With Lung, Prostate, Liver And Pancreatic Cancer
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Accuray Incorporated, a global leader in the field of radiosurgery, announced today that treatments of extracranial tumors using the CyberKnife(R) Robotic Radiosurgery System increased by 38 percent worldwide during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008. Specifically, during this time, prostate treatment grew approximately 95 percent worldwide, while lung, liver and pancreas treatments experienced double-digit growth. The ability of the CyberKnife System to non-invasively target tumors throughout the body with sub-millimeter accuracy is dramatically altering how the medical community and patients view radiosurgery. Designed originally for intracranial use, radiosurgery has long been an alternative to...
