Reiki and Intuitively Working with Animals

Free Advice from Animal Reiki Shaman, Rose De Dan

reiki kanji Reader Question: Hi. I know I have the gift of Reiki and would like to learn to use it to help animals. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! ~Sandra

Response from Rose: Dear Brenda, from your question it sounds like you have an interest in Reiki, a desire to help animals, and are seeking the right class and teacher to assist you.

While Reiki is one of the simplest forms of energy healing to learn, it does require a solid foundation that begins with finding a qualified Reiki Master/Teacher. This is a necessary first step for training and for receiving a Reiki attunement.

Since I began my healing and teaching practice over 16 years ago, the popularity of Reiki has grown and there are many options. I would suggest finding a qualified teacher locally, one with some years of experience as teacher and practicing energy healer, and who is available if questions arise after class. Small class size is best. It is also helpful to have access to a local Reiki community for practice and support. I do not recommend taking any Reiki training from a DVD unless you have already completed training in that level in-person.

I would also suggest choosing to take Reiki classes one level at a time rather than so-called "Reiki intensives" where you are trained in multiple levels in one weekend. There is much more to Reiki than learning "how-to." Each level with its own attunement(s) offers opportunity for spiritual/energetic growth as well as physical healing. Full benefits and awareness only occur when you allow time for daily self-Reiki and gain experience in offering it to others. You will have a much deeper knowledge of Reiki if you are willing to take it one step at a time and allow it to unfold within.

You may wonder why I have not said anything specific regarding Reiki for animals. I have many students who come to me wanting only to work with animals, and I tell them that you must remember that the animals come with people. There is no way in a healing practice to focus only on one species, you must be prepared to understand/work with both since their hearts are intertwined, and that requires a foundation in energy work for people, something any qualified Reiki Master/Teacher can assist you with.

Working with animals is simply an adaptation of basic Reiki training with more reliance on intuition; no special knowledge or hand positions are needed. The best advice I can offer is to ask the animals to be your teachers. They will be the best guides you can ever have.

As you progress in the levels you may wish to supplement your learning with books and quality online classes. These days there are many to choose from, The Everything Guide to Reiki by Phylameana lila Desy offers an excellent overview.

Whatever choices you make, my advice would be to place your reliance on your guides, the Reiki energy and the animals themselves rather than focusing on any one "right" way. The path of daily practice and listening for energetic and intuitive guidance will carry you farther than any book or focus on Reiki hand positions ever will.

Nominate Your Favorite Massage Tool
yogaThe Best Massage Tool category in the 2012 Readers' Choice Awards for Holistic Healing is a fairly broad category because there are so many different types of massage tools and devices to choose from to relieve aches and pains.

Devices range from economically priced massage oils to mechanical massage beds that can cost hundreds of dollars. Last year the Winner for Best Massage Device was Thera Cane. So far this year Thera Cane has once again been nominated. Two new contenders in the nomination race is Bongers and the Nayoya Acupressure Mat. Nominations are open until February 15th, so make sure your favorite massage device gets your help to make it to the top five finalists.... nominate your pick for Best Massage Device

Best Massage Table Maker has its own award opportunity. So far I've received nominations for three companies: Oakworks, Pisces Productions, and Master Massage (Last year's Winner). Get your nominations in to support these companies or some other massage table manufacturer that you feel should be included among the top five finalists.... nominate your pick now.

Nominate Your Favorites in Ten Healing Categories (23 awards in total).

Should You Give Up Yoga? Some Say Yoga is a Risky Business
yoga A recent article published in The New York Times written by William J. Broad has shone some unfavorable light onto the practice of yoga. Thank you to Daniel Strack, a Facebook Fan, who first alerted me to this article.

In the article How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body? yoga teacher Glenn Black warns about the potential damaging effects of doing yoga. Black noted that Americanized yoga classes tend to be more ego-driven than aligned with spiritual practice. Teachers and students are at risk of injury when they try to force their bodies into ranges of motion that are harmful to muscles and skeletal structure.

I'm no yoga expert but I do know three people personally who have attributed their years of yoga practice as contributing to and probably causing pain they now endure (back, hip, and knee pain). Ouch. This shared with me from individuals who continue to be disciplined yoga devotees. The woman with the bad knees routinely gets massages to help give relief.

A Guide associate and yoga expert, Ann Pizer, agrees that "yoga can be hazardous to your health..." she gives her opinion on the article in her blog here.

I'm more of a Pilates gal myself, although I have practiced Kundalini Yoga in the past. I meditate while I'm sitting comfortably on a pillow (legs crossed) or upright on the couch, feet on the floor. I'm not nay-saying yoga. I think yoga has its pluses and minuses. We live on a planet of duality after all... nothing is black or white. In my view yoga has more positives going for it. My personal healing focus is primarily about balance and awareness. Any meditative practice or physical exercise can be positive when done appropriately, BUT, they can also be harmful when done in excess or without regard to possible harm.

Advice for Getting Out of a Self-Critical Cycle
critical motherFree Advice from Intuitive Life Coach, Anandra George

Question: People always criticize me. I am constantly on guard, waiting to be hit with people's words. My mother was very critical and strict. But I know deep inside that I love life and want to be free, even though I'm shy and meek and also self-critical. How can I change this?

Anandra's Answer: It sounds like you'd very much enjoy being seen, understood, loved, and appreciated as you are.

There's nothing you need to change or fix about yourself in order to deserve love. Your soul is perfect and totally lovable as it is!! The only thing you need to practice or "do" is to consistently remember is your true nature (your soul, your spirit, your essence, the "I AM" behind all other ideas you have about yourself).

Your work, if you want to get out of this cycle, is to distinguish between your inherent goodness that does not grow or shrink from praise or criticism, and the limited identity that was formed in response to your childhood environment. That self (not the real you) is dependent on and/or defensive to the words and actions of others, and is always swinging back and forth between stress (I am bad) and relief (I am good), and can never be at peace.

It takes a bit of discipline, but please remember that when you're upset, you can't change the other person. You can only change yourself, and use the gift of the experience to lead you deeper into yourself, where a negative belief system was hiding that was causing you pain. ...
